The Use of a Deck As a Multifunctional Area

Most new (and old) houses have a deck off the side or rear of the house. In designing a new house, an owner usually just installs a deck of 'X' amount of space and really doesn't think much about how the deck is going to be used. As an Architect, the deck design is just as important as the rest of the house design. In real terms, a deck can be used as additional floor space and storage, at a significantly lower cost than the rest of the house. The deck should be used as an extension of the living space, and the spaces below the deck used as storage. Here are some tips to make your deck work more for you.

1. Use a large glass doors to open to the deck. You can use sliding glass doors or swing doors. Glass doors let you see the deck when they area closed. Have the opening at least 4 feet wide (minimum) or wider. On my house I have a 12' siding glass door, which opens in the middle for a 6 foot wide opening. It allows free flow of people between the Great Room and the deck and gives a sense of Great Room and Deck being the same room.

2. Don't skimp on the size of your deck--make it even larger than your Great Room or Living Room. Think of the deck as an additional Living Room, with couches, chairs, dining tables, TV's, stereos. In other words, Think of it as living space to be used in the milder temperatures of the year. My Great Room is 22'x34'. The deck is 20'x38', with 20'x28' covered with a roof.

3. Don't have a step between the deck and the house 1st floor. Instead have the deck flush with the house. This gives sense that the deck is an extension of the home.

4. Put a roof over the deck. The roof can be a canopy, metal roof, or an extension of the house roof (wood framing, asphalt shingles). Having a roof over the deck area makes it more "livable" when the sun is out. It also gives a "human" scale to deck. A roof overhead makes it feel psychologically more comfortable, putting a ceiling above where you sit on the deck, rather than open sky. A roof also makes the deck usable when it rains.

5. Use drywall and carpet instead of siding and decking.. If you put a roof over the deck, install moisture resistant drywall or "flat" siding on the home exterior wall and indoor/outdoor carpet on pressure treated plywood rather than expensive floor decking. It is less expensive, and gives the deck the look of being inside the house rather being outside.

6. The deck area and the furniture should be flexible. You shouldn't cram a lot of furniture on it, but allow for people to filter out of the house onto the deck, or change the arrangement of furniture for large gatherings. My favorite use of the deck is for birthday parties. My son may have 30 guests arrive, so we rearrange the furniture and set up 4 long tables with chairs around. It keeps the Great Room open for guests to move around, and put dining on the deck.

7. Use plants, and wall hangings on the deck, just like you would in the house. Just make sure they are more "weatherproof" than normal. It will give the deck the illusion the of being part of the house

8. The deck can have shaded areas and sunny areas. Not all the deck needs to covered. Keep a small area uncovered for some of the in-between times of the year. In Indiana, it's warm-sunny in the summer and cold-snowy in the winter. But in Spring and Fall, it's in-between these 2 extremes. Sitting in the sun on the deck in March at 55 degrees is wonderful. The warm sun shine makes it feel like summer. Also if you have a grille, you don't want it under the roof. Letting the smoke lift into the sky is more preferable for most people rather than letting filter into the house.

9. Change the function of the deck as seasons change. How the deck is used in spring, summer, and fall should be considered in your design. For our house, in the summer, The swimming pool is set up in the sunny area of the deck, while seating and dining is in the shaded area of the deck. In fall and spring, the pool is removed, and the seating and dining tables are in the sunny areas of the deck. In the winter, the seating and dining are kept under the deck roof to protect it from the harsh winter.

10 The deck railing and wall under the deck can be solid. Having the railing and space below the deck floor covered in the same siding as the house (even brick), rather than open fencing has a couple of advantages. First, it makes the house look bigger from the street. It visually seems like house has grown larger ins size. A solid railing (3'-6" in height) allows privacy. If you sit down, people on the street can't see you, but if you stand up, you can converse with your neighbors. A railing at 3'-6" is also perfect "leaning" height for most people, you can rest your elbows on the top of the wall at this height.

11. The area under the deck change be used for storage. Having the space below the deck floor covered in siding allows for storage under the deck to be hidden from view. If the 1st floor of the house is 6 feet above grade, the deck effectively becomes a shed and is a perfect place for the storage of things normally in a garage. Having a roof above the deck also keeps weather off items under the deck. This is the place for bicycles, lawn mowers, scrap lumber, saw horses, and other bulky items normally found in a garage. Most people want a 3 car garage simply to have 1 bay of the garage for storage. Instead of building a third garage bay, put those items under the deck.

How to Buy the Best Patio Umbrella

Patio umbrella have today become quite commonplace and many consider it an essential addition to their outdoor furniture set. The two common types of patio umbrellas are the ones that stand on table tops and the ones that stand alone. This kind of Patio Umbrellas also come with tilting mechanism so that you can tilt the umbrella in any direction to block the sun rays.

There are metal framed umbrellas and wooden framed umbrellas available in the market. The wooden framed are manually operated and metal framed are automatically operated.

Besides, buying a patio umbrella is a worthwhile long-term investment provided you spend adequate time to study the different types of patio umbrellas and make a smart purchase. Remember that an aesthetic patio umbrella not only protects your family and friends from the torrid summer sun, but also enhances the decor of you outdoor setting.

Measure the space you wish to cover and then decide what size and height umbrella suits your needs. Check that there is sufficient room for the table and chairs for your family members and guests. Opt for a tall pole to cast a more expansive shadow - provided the space permits.

It is essential that you properly balance the size of the umbrella and its base, particularly if you choose to purchase them separately. It will be obviously appear clumsy if you attempt to fix a 4-foot umbrella over a table top 6 feet in diameter.

Try to choose a best umbrella of ideal size that is neither too large nor too small for the area you wish to cover. As far as possible, choose a patio umbrella in one piece, but in any case be sure the pole can support your umbrella. The patio umbrellas come in different shapes - square, rectangular, circular etc.

Think of some cool dull color fabrics that are soothing to the eyes and not bright colors that will further accentuate the heat. Look for canopy fabrics that resist mildew and rain water and fabrics that can be easily cleaned as the canopy is prone to collecting dust and dirt. Some umbrellas come in multi-colorful patterns and this is an option you can consider if you really care for aesthetics.

Please know that single canopy umbrellas in solid sheet vinyl may lack stability and can topple when a strong wind blows. Instead, go for double canopy designs made from porous weaves. The umbrella you choose should, most importantly, protect those sitting underneath it from UV rays.

Find out from the shop owner whether the umbrella you are considering has this feature. You can choose Sunbrella fabric that is resistant to heat, water and bad weather conditions and also protects you from UV rays. Enquire from the shopkeeper if there is any special cleaning or storage instructions before buying the such umbrella.

Adjusting and Fitting New Wheels on a Sliding Aluminum Patio Door

If your patio door is difficult to open and close it may require adjusting or a new set of wheels. Try adjusting the patio door before spending any money on new wheels.

Adjusting the Wheels
The patio wheel adjusting screws are located at either end of the bottom section of the door. Some patio doors have a blanking plug covering the adjustment hole, remove the plug and use a torch to shine into the bottom section of the door to determine where the screw is located and what type of screw it is. There maybe two screws that are visible, one is an adjustment screw and the other is a fixing screw that holds the patio frame together. Use a long screwdriver to turn the adjusting screw in a clockwise direction to raise the patio. Adjust both wheels the same and check if the patio is level by almost closing the door and noting the gap between the door and the frame. Adjust the wheels until the gap is even all the way down. You may need to move the door locking keeper on the frame after adjusting the wheels. If this didn't solve the problem you may need to replace the patio wheels.

Removing the patio door to lubricate or replace the wheels
To replace the patio wheels the door must be removed from the frame. Adjust the patio wheels down to the lowest level by following the instructions above but this time turn the wheel adjusting screws on both doors anti clockwise. This will give you more room to remove the patio door.

Contact your local Glazing company and see if you can rent or borrow two glass lifting suckers from them, this will make the job a lot easier. If you can't get any Glass Lifting Suckers a garden spade can be used to lift / lever the patio door off the bottom track. Take care not to damage the door, frame or sill when doing this. You should be able to lift one side at a time and pull the bottom of the patio door toward you. CAUTION! Patio doors are heavy and I would not recommend trying to remove the door on your own.

Removing the patio wheels
Place the door on trestles and examine the patio wheels. It may be that they just need cleaning and lubricating. If they are damaged or the bearings have gone, you will have to replace them.

Remove the two screws holding the bottom section of the frame. There is one screw either side of the bottom section. Once these have been removed the bottom section can be prized away from the rest of the frame. Be careful not to lever against the glass or you could shatter it. When the bottom section is clear from the rest of the frame you will be able to remove the wheels. Some wheels have a screw holding them in and some are pressed into a holding bracket. If the retaining screws have rusted you can carefully drill them out, taking care not to make the hole in the bottom section any bigger. Contact your local Hardware Store, Glazing Shop or search on Google for replacement wheels.

After fitting the new wheels, make sure that they are adjusted completely flat or into the bottom section. This will give you more room when re-fitting the patio door. The wheels can be adjusted to the correct height after the door is fitted into the frame. Spray the wheels with a silicone lubricating spray. Before re-fitting the door, clear out any debris such as leaves and dirt from the track and spray the track, locking mechanism and top door channel with a silicone lubricating spray. Re-fit the door and adjust the wheels as described above.

Tips For Designing A Backyard Patio

A family that likes to spend time outside cannot really enjoy their backyard if they do not have a patio to relax on. When a home does not already have a patio installed, the family has the unique opportunity to design one just for their needs. This can be an exciting project, but there are a few things to consider before getting started.

The most important decision when it comes to designing a patio is what type of material is going to be used for construction. Wood and brick are the most common materials, but there are other choices available for someone who wants to be creative. Using tile or pebbles to construct the deck could give it a very interesting look that will be different than every other home on the block.

It is also important to consider what types of activities are likely to take place on the patio. If a couple without children is building a patio, it could be taken up with a large table for entertaining their friends. If kids will be using the patio, it is a good idea to use a softer surface and leave a great deal of space for playing.

Once the patio is in place, it is time to make it not only functional but also beautiful. Landscaping a patio is a great way to add color and life to the new living space. Potted plants are a great option, and it is also possible to plant flowers along the edges of the patio.

If a family wants to get more use out of their outdoor space, they should consider designing a patio. They could choose from the traditional materials, or they might want to try something completely new for a unique look. Whatever they choose, they should make sure that it will be able to serve the needs of each member of the family.
