How To Build a Patio In Under A Day

Want to build a patio without really going through all the steps of learning how to build a patio? At any garden or home improvement store, you will find those 'walkway' stones.

They usually come in many different shapes, sizes and colors. To build a patio using these, and without pouring any cement at all, you just figure out how large you would want your patio.

For example, if you want a 100 square foot patio, you would want to pick up a hundred of these 'walkway' squares. That is because the usual size is about one square foot each. This is one of the quickest ways to learn how to build a patio. Then you would dig your ground up and level it.

You can use a rake and a shovel for this. Use the rake to make the dirt nice and even and then set your stepping stones on the ground and line them up next to each other.

If you want to turn your patio into a perfect square, you will want to make ten rows of ten. You want to fit them as closely together as you can. Then stomp them down a bit into the dirt that you have raked up.

Ensure that all of your stepping stones are even. Then you will shovel your extra dirt on top of the squares. Even if there isn't much dirt left go ahead and do this anyway.

After you have spread the dirt over all of it as evenly as possible, go ahead and sweep it off the stones. This helps fill up any small cracks or spaces in the patio squares. Voila! This is one of the easiest ways to learn how to build a patio ever.

Patio Fireplaces

Patio fireplaces are free standing enclosed units that have chimneys to let the smoke vent from the fireplace just as the fireplace indoors has to have a chimney. Usually they burn wood or briquettes, but you can also get gas and propane fireplaces that provide the same heat but without the smoke and the trouble of trying to light the wood.

Using a fireplace on the patio is not a new idea. It lets you use the patio for longer periods of time in the spring and fall when the weather may be sunny, but the air is still cold. Some of the different types of outdoor fireplaces you can use for your patio include

  • The Chimenea fireplace. This is a Mexican outdoor fireplace with a chubby base where the fire burns and a tall narrow chimney through which the smoke vents. Usually these fireplaces are made from clay, but you can purchase cast iron models. If you have a clay chimenea, you want to make sure that you have it in the proper place. Moving it often can cause the clay to crack.
  • Fire rings. These are the cheapest type of fireplaces for patios. It consists of a cast iron ring without a bottom and the fire burns inside the ring. This would not be suitable to have directly on the patio and is best used off the patio.
  • Having a fireplace on the patio adds an ambiance to the patio in addition to providing warmth on a chilly evening. They usually have a hinged door in the front that gives you easy access for lighting a fire and adding wood or briquettes to keep it going. The screen assembly is easy to remove and you can also use them to cook food when you have a gathering of people on the patio. The fireplace you choose should be placed on concrete or brick. If you have a wooden floor on the patio, you should have anon-combustible pad under it to avoid catching the patio on fire.

Patio Furniture Cushions-Find the Right Ones for Your Furniture

If you’ve ever had to sit on a hard chair or bench for an extended period of time, you know that it can become quite uncomfortable after a while. Because of this, many people decide to buy patio furniture cushions to compliment their outdoor patio furniture. However, not all patio furniture cushions are created equal and it’s important that you know what to look for before making a purchasing decision.

The first thing you need to know when shopping for patio furniture cushions is how many cushions you need and what sizes you need them to be. For instance, you may need two patio furniture cushions for two benches, but not all benches are the same size. You would need to measure your benches to ensure the patio furniture cushions you buy will fit each of them properly. The same applies to all of your patio furniture.

Once you know how many patio furniture cushions you need to buy and what sizes those cushions should be, it’s time to decide on a color. Your choice of cushion colors is almost endless. Blues, greens, reds, neutrals – the list goes on. Make sure you pick a color that will compliment your home as well as your patio furniture.

Now you know how many patio furniture cushions you need, what sizes they need to be and what color scheme you want to follow. It’s time to determine what type of fabric you want your patio furniture cushions made from.

If you think that one cushion fabric isn’t much different from the next, you couldn’t be more wrong. Some fabrics stain easier, fade easier and aren’t as water resistant. Cotton canvas used to be one of the most popular fabrics for patio furniture cushions. Nowadays, cotton canvas is being replaced by an acrylic fabric called Sunbrella. This is because the Sunbrella fabric doesn’t fade like cotton canvas and it offers more mold resistance.

While finding the perfect patio furniture cushions may take a bit of time and a little effort, the perfect cushions are well worth it in the long run.
