Patio Rooms

Patio rooms are a growing trend among homeowners who want the patio to be an extension of the house. During the warm summer months, people often spend more time on the patio than they do in their living room and kitchen. Therefore they want the patio to become a room where they will feel comfortable and relaxed. The patio in the backyard has become the focal area for entertainment as people gather to enjoy a barbecue. It also eliminates having a mess in the living room or den because everything, cooking and entertaining, is done outdoors.

Having a patio that looks like a room in your home takes a bit of creative work. Before you start to build the patio of your dreams, you need to decide what kind of furniture you will have and if there are any decorative features, such as fountains or planters you want to include. The average patio is about 300 to 400 square feet, so you can mark off this space in your backyard to see if it will be sufficient. The size of the patio also has to suit the size of the house because a large patio on a small house is not aesthetically pleasing.

If you place furniture just outside the patio door, it makes the patio look inviting, just as your living room is. This invites guests to go out on the patio and have a seat. You can have cushions in the same pattern as the furniture just inside the door, truly making the patio an extension of the room. Built-in benches of the same material of the patio give you extra seating area that blends into the patio and does not stand out.

A grill or barbeque should stand out because this says that you will be doing cooking in this room. You should make sure you have it placed in the best location on the patio so that it is sheltered from the prevailing winds allowing you to cook in comfort when you are outdoors.

Upgrade Your Patio For Maximum Enjoyment

If you have a house or have just purchased a house, it probably comes with a patio. Most patios are nothing more than a simple slab of concrete and need some sprucing up to look nice. If you are lucky, you have room for a patio that you can make you own with a unique design choice.

Not all of us live in places where the weather is cooperative and some people choose to install an enclosed patio. This gives them the advantage of being able to use their patio year round and it also becomes another room in the house. Usually, a patio of this type is made out of a material that you can see out of and enjoy as an extension of the house.

If you are stuck with the normal "slab of concrete", it doesn't mean that you can't make it look it's best. Although you can't change the concrete itself, you can change the area around it. Potted plants and flowers around the concrete will add life and much needed color. Bushes or small trees can be planted to give the patio area the feel that you are in a garden as opposed to just on a slab of concrete.

You might add a trail or path away from your patio into the garden to create the illusion that the patio is part of a bigger design. Think creatively when you look at the area surrounding your patio to think of ways you can connect the garden to your patio. Incorporating the garden "feel" into your patio design will connect the two and make them seem as one.

Another great way to upgrade your patio experience is to buy a freestanding fireplace table. These units serve as the centerpiece table and they have fire under them that is usually fueled by gas. This gives your patio an added touch of elegance and can extend the use of your patio into the cooler months. Outdoor heaters that you often see outside restaurants are another similar option.

The furniture you decide to use on your patio will be a determining factor in making your patio a special place. The furniture, if chosen carfully, will work with the surrounding elements to give your patio a comfortable feeling and a make it a place that is enjoyable to use. If you choose plain chairs and a table, no matter what you do to the surrounding area will make your patio special. Your patio furniture must work with the surroundings to give it the desired feel that you want.

Just because you have a small patio does not mean you can't make it a great place to hang out. Be creative and treat your patio like another room in your house. If you do that, your patio will indeed become another room and it will be an enjoyable place to spend your summer evenings for years to come.

Adjusting and Fitting New Wheels on a Sliding Aluminum Patio Door

If your patio door is difficult to open and close it may require adjusting or a new set of wheels. Try adjusting the patio door before spending any money on new wheels.

Adjusting the Wheels
The patio wheel adjusting screws are located at either end of the bottom section of the door. Some patio doors have a blanking plug covering the adjustment hole, remove the plug and use a torch to shine into the bottom section of the door to determine where the screw is located and what type of screw it is. There maybe two screws that are visible, one is an adjustment screw and the other is a fixing screw that holds the patio frame together. Use a long screwdriver to turn the adjusting screw in a clockwise direction to raise the patio. Adjust both wheels the same and check if the patio is level by almost closing the door and noting the gap between the door and the frame. Adjust the wheels until the gap is even all the way down. You may need to move the door locking keeper on the frame after adjusting the wheels. If this didn't solve the problem you may need to replace the patio wheels.

Removing the patio door to lubricate or replace the wheels
To replace the patio wheels the door must be removed from the frame. Adjust the patio wheels down to the lowest level by following the instructions above but this time turn the wheel adjusting screws on both doors anti clockwise. This will give you more room to remove the patio door.

Contact your local Glazing company and see if you can rent or borrow two glass lifting suckers from them, this will make the job a lot easier. If you can't get any Glass Lifting Suckers a garden spade can be used to lift / lever the patio door off the bottom track. Take care not to damage the door, frame or sill when doing this. You should be able to lift one side at a time and pull the bottom of the patio door toward you. CAUTION! Patio doors are heavy and I would not recommend trying to remove the door on your own.

Removing the patio wheels
Place the door on trestles and examine the patio wheels. It may be that they just need cleaning and lubricating. If they are damaged or the bearings have gone, you will have to replace them.

Remove the two screws holding the bottom section of the frame. There is one screw either side of the bottom section. Once these have been removed the bottom section can be prized away from the rest of the frame. Be careful not to lever against the glass or you could shatter it. When the bottom section is clear from the rest of the frame you will be able to remove the wheels. Some wheels have a screw holding them in and some are pressed into a holding bracket. If the retaining screws have rusted you can carefully drill them out, taking care not to make the hole in the bottom section any bigger. Contact your local Hardware Store, Glazing Shop or search on Google for replacement wheels.

After fitting the new wheels, make sure that they are adjusted completely flat or into the bottom section. This will give you more room when re-fitting the patio door. The wheels can be adjusted to the correct height after the door is fitted into the frame. Spray the wheels with a silicone lubricating spray. Before re-fitting the door, clear out any debris such as leaves and dirt from the track and spray the track, locking mechanism and top door channel with a silicone lubricating spray. Re-fit the door and adjust the wheels as described above.

How Patio Covers Can Benefit You

Patio covers protect your guests on your patio from the sun and heat during the summer months. A patio cover will make the patio that just more comfortable during the hot days and it will allow you to enjoy the patio more than you otherwise would have.

By installing a patio cover you can transform your patio into an outdoor room attached to your house. The type of cover you purchase will determine whether it will be a room that is part of your backyard or a room that is part of your home where you can lounge around watching television.

There are a number of things that you will need to consider when you start investigating a patio cover. First is the material it is constructed from. You can find patio covers made from wood, fabric or metal and you will need to choose a material that is robust for your weather and type of house. The second is the style - would you like a traditional, modern, asian or roman type of cover?

You can install a patio yourself using a DIY patio cover kit. These can be purchased from DIY or handyman stores. The kits include everything you need to install the patio correctly and enjoy it for years to come.

DIY kits are not for everyone. If this is the case for you then you should ask a builder for a quote. This will be more expensive than a DIY kit but you will likely be more confident in its construction and will be able to save on effort and time.

A Guide to Patio Awnings

In many homes, especially in suburban and rural locations, the patio is one of the most cherished places in the home. Patios remind us of good times with friends and family, as the kids play and the ribs sizzle on the barbecue. Many of us also spend a considerable amount of money on our patio furniture and equipment to make it a more inviting and charming location.

Patio awnings are one way to increase the enjoyment of your patio experience. Patio awnings provide shelter from summer heat and provide much-needed shade on those sweltering evening cookouts. Patio awnings are increasing in popularity and are available in an endless variety of styles, colors and options.

Some people like the fact that patio awnings seem to add space and square footage to a home. A patio in itself is an attractive feature of any home. When you add patio awnings, however, it seems almost as if a room has been added to the home. A patio awning seems to almost enclose the patio and creates an outdoor room that everyone is sure to enjoy.

Patio awnings are available in both manual and electronic styles. The manual style patio awnings allow the homeowner to manually adjust the depth, or pitch, of the awning’s fabric. You can choose to have the awning completely open or merely partially open according to your preferences. Automatic, or electronic, patio awnings are controlled by electronic “arms” with the push of a button; many also have remote controls for easier use. Automatic patio awnings usually also come with a manual override feature in case of a power outage. or if the motor should stop performing.

Awnings Info provides detailed information about retractable, canvas, window, RV, patio, aluminum, deck, and commercial awnings. Awnings Info is the sister site of Gazebos Web.

Patio chair cushions – The key to creating the perfect outdoor sanctuary.

The elements of a sanctuary differ only in your personal tastes. The perfect outdoor sanctuary will include: seating, landscaping, and the fine touches, like patio chair cushions, that make it a relaxing and comfortable space to be in. Let's examine how to use each of these elements to create a personalized and comfortable outdoor space.

Step One: Defining your space. What type of space are you looking for? What will its purpose be? Are you looking for a quiet spa like getaway or a spiritual retreat? Do you want your outdoor space to be an ultra comfortable place with lots of lush patio chair cushions where you can entertain or a location that is designed just for you? Take a moment to decide the purpose of your space.

Now, with the purpose of your outdoor room in mind, step outside and evaluate the amount of space that you have. Does the purpose of your space fit into the size of your yard? For example if you want your outdoor space to be a place that you can entertain but you only have a 10 x 10 patio, you may want to reconsider the purpose of your space.

Do you want a separate area to dine and a separate sitting area? Will you need to pour a patio? The answer may lie in the purpose of your space. Traditional outdoor spaces generally segment the seating and entertaining area with a different surface. However, this doesn't mean that you have to spend a lot of money. There are a variety of materials you can use to segment your yard including gravel or wood chips. Stepping stones can be placed to create a path to and from the seating area. Keep in mind that you probably don't want you segmented space within your yard to take up more than a third of the space. This means that if you have 300 square feet of yard space, you'll want to designate only 100 square feet of it to a patio, deck or other type of material.

Step Two: Choosing your furniture. Your patio furniture sets the tone for your space. Beginning with materials, you will want to decide how your furniture will help you meet your goals for your outdoor space. Wrought iron furniture is significantly more formal than an earthy and natural teak table set. Wicker is casual and can set the stage for a comfortable cottage feel or a luxurious garden space.

Of course the pieces that you choose are important too. A picnic table and bench may fit the needs of a traditional family focused space while a simple meditation bench might be the perfect addition to a Zen Garden. If you're setting your space up for entertainment, you can look for outdoor sofas or a large dining set – if you have enough room you can do both! The choices are many and range from Adirondack chairs to chaise lounges, picnic tables, sofas, dining sets, benches and much more. Of course, no seating, even minimalist seating, is complete without a cushion. Let's move onto Step 3 and examine how patio chair cushions and other details set the perfect stage for your outdoor room.

Step Three: The details. Looking back at the purpose of your outdoor space what details will bring it all together? If you're creating a tropical paradise then you'll likely want to do some landscaping to create a lush environment. The tropics is also full of bright colors like fuchsia, deep green, orange, and even vibrant blues. Choose patio chair cushions that give your space a tropical flair. Imagine the stunning effect a bright yellow or fuchsia cushion will have.

Neutral colored patio chair cushions lend themselves to a more Zen-like outdoor retreat. Of course the details don't stop with patio chair cushions. Planters, umbrellas, landscaping, and details like an arbor or trellis will also help you set the stage. Consider water features for quiet retreats, and hot tubs and outdoor grills for a space devoted to entertaining.

Follow these three basic steps when planning your outdoor sanctuary and you'll be on your way to creating your ideal space. Remember that when it comes to creating your ideal space you need to have a purpose for your space, choose furniture that fits the size of your space, the style of your yard, and the purpose of your environment. You also need to really focus on the details from the big stuff like your landscaping all the way down to the type of patio chair cushion that you choose.

Patio Chair Cushions – Learn the keys to a perfectly designed outdoor space

Your back yard is your outdoor sanctuary. It's the place that you can go to relax, entertain, and even play. Why shouldn't it be as beautiful, and comfortable, as your inside space? Using the basic principles of design, scale, proportion, balance, emphasis, contrast, and unity, fantastic things will happen. Beginning with the size of your patio furniture and ending with your patio chair cushions, let's walk through a few simple steps you can take to transform your back yard.

Whether you have acres and acres of land or a simple patio off of the back of a condominium, it is possible to have the outdoor sanctuary you desire. Begin by taking measurements of your space – not the entire backyard but the space that you're going to convert into an outdoor room. Once you have your measurements, you will want to plan on buying patio furniture to fill about 1/3 of that space. A bench and a coffee table or two patio chairs and a bistro table are ideal for small outdoor spaces. Conversely if you have a large space you will have room for a dining set, lounge furniture and maybe even a large outdoor grill and an enclosure.

Your next step will be to find or create a focal point. The chiminea has had an upsurge in popularity however a more traditional focal point like an arbor, pergola, or even a beautiful outdoor planter can have a striking affect. If you have space, consider creating a sitting or lounging area separate from a dining area and place the focal point where both seating areas can view it. Use the design principle of threes to make your backyard space feel balanced. This means that if you have two chairs add a small table to balance. If you're using planters to create a focal point stack or arrange three of them together.

Your final step in creating a winning outdoor space that you can be proud of is to add the final touches. One of the absolute best final touches that you can add, and one that will increase your comfort immeasurably, is to add patio chair cushions to your chairs. Begin by choosing patio chair cushions that fit your chairs specifically. This means that just because you really like the folding chair cushions but you have Adirondack chairs, don't buy the folding chair cushions. Why? Because you want your cushions to fit properly. You don't want a cushion that slides off every time you sit down, or worse ends up on the ground. You've spent your valuable time and money making your outdoor space a retreat, don't skimp on the details.

There's no end to the selection of patio chair cushions. A wide selection means that you are sure to find the right patio chair cushions to add that extra zing to your back yard. Like spice and color? Look for reds, yellows, and patterns. For a more subtle look choose a neutral color like green or tan. For extra durability and a long life, make sure your cushions can be laundered. This makes cleaning them as easy as dropping them into your washing machine.

A few extra things to think about when choosing your patio chair cushions:

• Durability features like reinforced seams, zippers and piping protect your patio chair cushions from every day wear and tear.

• Stay tight tie tabs keep your patio chair cushions tied down and ensure that your cushions won't end up in the pool or on your neighbor's chairs.

• Don't forget to look for cushions to adorn all chairs, from benches to steamer lounges to your folding chairs. Good design is all about paying attention to the details. In your outdoor space, your patio chair cushions are your details.

Well balanced seating to fit your outdoor space are just the beginning to a perfect yard. Umbrellas, landscaping, and high end outdoor appliances can really take your outdoor space to the next level but don't forget the simple elements of design. Balance, color, focal points, and details details details. The easiest detail to master? Your patio chair cushions of course!

Patio Design - Add Awnings As A Colorful Finish For Your Patio Design

Patio design, planned with care and creativity, not only becomes a value-adding asset to your home, but expands your living and entertainment areas substantially. Elements such as awnings will complement any patio design, adding both color and protection against the powers of nature.

Your patio design will depend on the area you have available, the maintenance-level you prefer, and your lifestyle needs.

You may need some serious landscaping, and choose complicated water features. Or you may have only a limited space, and an even more limited budget. A patio doesn't have to be oversized, in order to be functional. A competent landscaping designer will be able to present you with a patio design, perfect for your pocket and property.

You can draw on a wealth of ideas while planning your patio design. Magazines are an excellent source of inspiration. The idea is to make the patio an extension of your home. To achieve this ideal, the patio design has to blend in with the design of your living space. This includes the architecture, as well as the interior décor.

A number of paving possibilities are available. Concrete patio pavers or interlocking patio pavers are extremely popular, affordable, and durable. These come in sizes, shapes, and textures to fit from a simple patio design, to an elaborate landscaped outdoor area.

Stone or brick patios are another viable option, especially if durability is a concern. If you choose a stone patio, make sure that the pavers have been fired in such a way that they are weather resistant. A wooden deck has its place in patio design, but also has limitations with respect to lifespan and maintenance. However, if the planned patio area is sloped, or has drainage problems, a deck may be a simple solution.

The features you incorporate into your patio design, create atmosphere. A water feature facilitates a feeling of tranquility and relaxation. Another advantage is that it helps to mask noise, such as passing traffic. You may choose to add an herb garden, with lavender and other fragrant, calming plants. Flower beds or boxes can be a source of greenery and color.

The patio furniture you choose, will depend on your personal taste and budget. Keep in mind that exposure to sun and showers necessitates quality materials.

Colorful canvas awnings add an elegant finishing touch to your patio design, as discussed at Awnings-and-Blinds.com. To use your extended 'living room' to the fullest, it is vital to have protection against the sun, wind, rain, and worrisome insects.

Awnings made with quality fabric offer UV protection, are weather resistant, and waterproof. Look for models that can be retracted when you want to bask in a bit of sunshine, or when you want to enjoy the company of the moon and stars on a romantic evening out...

Some awning designs make provision for an extra screen that can be added, which will give you an insect-free zone. You will be able to relax and enjoy visiting with guests, while nasties such as mosquitoes and flies are kept at bay.

One of the best investments you can make in your property, is the addition of a harmonious patio, done within the guidelines of a well-planned patio design.

This is where a patio awning can be a huge asset. By providing against protection against the sun in summer and the rain in winter, an awning can turn your patio into an outdoor room for your house. Some people even go as far as placing televisions and couches on their patio so they can enjoy these comforts in the outside air.

There are generally 3 different types of patio awnings. The first is the canvas awning. As the name suggests, they are made from tough canvas. The second is a metal or aluminum awning that stretches over the patio like another roof. Both the canvas or metal awnings are fixed, meaning that they cannot be retracted. This means you need to be carefully if you live in a high wind area. Otherwise, you may find that the awning becomes damaged during high winds. Retractable awnings can be retracted when the weather turns bad.

When selecting a canvas awning, it is important to consider the type of material that it will be made of. You want one that has high UV protection. Patio Furniture: The Pros And Cons Of The Different Kinds Of Patio Furniture

For many people, relaxation in their homes involves lounging in their patio furniture and relishing the fresh air in their backyards. Parents usually spend weekends unwinding in their patio while the kids play their games in the backyard. Homeowners also invite friends and family over to an occasional barbecue, whose setting is, of course, the patio.

The patio is really the center of many different kinds of outdoor activities for the entire family. This is why it is important to select good quality patio furniture that is durable enough to withstand all this activity, as well as have a style that reflects the homeowner's personal taste in design.

There are actually several kinds of patio furniture to choose from. Among the most prevalent materials used these days are wood and wicker, which both look quite nice in an outdoor setting. Their natural color and material makes them blend well with the backdrop provided by your garden.

Many home owners also opt for wrought iron because they are more durable and require less maintenance, while also giving a look of opulence to their outdoor space. They actually have the romantic look that was very popular in the 18th century. Their weight will prevent them from toppling over in torrential winds, so you can leave them outside practically all year round.

Still there are others who choose to buy plastic patio furniture. This kind of patio furniture is easy to put away right after a gathering because they can stack. They are also easy to move around because of their light weight. However, for the more design-oriented homeowner, plastic patio furniture may not be the best choice as they do not offer much aesthetic value.

There are also less common types of patio furniture, such as glass or vinyl. For those homeowners who have covered patios, regular living room furniture may be brought out to the patio as well. In fact, many people treat patios as their outdoor living rooms, and their patio furniture are sofas and couches that you would normally find indoors. For more info see http://www.homepatiodeck.com/Articles/Patio_Design.php on Patio Design.

3. Wood Is More Beautiful

Aesthetically speaking, wood has gained supremacy over different materials used in making patio coverings. Hardwoods like cedar and redwood are usually used in making wooden patio covers. This material gives you the natural beauty of wood grain that simply isn't available with any other materials on the market. Plus the variety of ways one could do to accentuate the designs on their patios.

- Turn your patio into a beautiful work of art
- Impress your friends
- Give your backyard a personal style
- Add value to your home
- Protect your patio from the elements
- Barbeque during rain or snow conditions
- Provides shade during summer heat
- Wood costs less than other materials, about 20-30% cheaper than vinyl or aluminum.

4. Disadvantages of Wood

Wood covers need a lot of maintenance over the years. They require a regular treatment to prevent water from seeping into the wood, and deter insects from eating into the wood itself. Wooden patio covers are susceptible to damages brought about by rain, wind and sun. Since wood deteriorates faster than the synthetic materials because of the nature’s interfering elements, it will need extra attention. FOr this reason, preservatives should be applied to the wood in the first two years. This is done to ensure the durability of the wood. Application of the preservatives after two years is within every three years. Over the years your low investment with wood patio covering would increase. With the cost of maintenance at hand, having a vinyl or aluminum covering would cost you less in the long run.

Patio Awnings Add to Your Outdoor Fun

Are you looking for a real good patio cover design? You can rest assured, if your architect designed the patio, it is probably custom-made and of good quality. Try to match the patio cover with the house layout and usage. It depends on what you use your patio for, as you could use it as a utility room to place a grill, a table and some chairs, or use it for entertaining purposes. You may also use it for a hobby or recreation area, or an all-weather living area for your family pet.

There are tons of designs, ranging from patio awnings with partial cover or patio umbrellas for limited area cover. There are aluminum or wood patio covers to protect against rain or sun. If you decide on the wood or aluminum cover, make sure it's of the highest quality material, as well as being fashionable and functional.

Most patio awnings are maintenance-free and are of the highest quality, and will not twist, warp, decay or rot. If you live in the area where there's a lot of sunlight, there are solar-designed patio covers that offer shade, and produce clean and environmentally-friendly electricity.

Selecting the best patio cover design will depend on the shape of your structure and your décor. Try covering one half of your deck with a lattice design and the other portion with a solid roof. This will give you an area that is still exposed to light on one side and complete shade on the other. Also, have a look at a pergola structure as this can create a relaxing outdoor atmosphere. It has angled slats to give you an airy feeling and at the same time will block out sun and give you great shade. Regardless of what type of patio umbrellas or patio awnings you choose, remember to keep functionality in mind.

Patios: The New Trend in Home Remodels

In years past a patio was sort of a throw on to a home. It was typically a concrete slab to keep your feet clean on your way in or out. Then you'd plunk down a couple of chairs and a table and enjoy your patio when the sun went down. More recently, covered patios have become very popular. Adding a patio or "outdoor living area" to your home is both a great investment and a relaxing extension of your homes interior that you can enjoy all day and all yearlong. You might want to consider the following features.

1: Add an outdoor kitchen to your patio for easy entertaining. When planning your kitchen think about storage, clean up and prep areas. You can buy pre-made outdoor grills with these features or build your own custom kitchen.

2: Patio furnishings can be quite luxurious because they’re protected from the elements. Think outdoor living room with comfortable chairs, lounges, couches and plants all around.

3: If you have a spacious patio you might add a home spa. You can make this a focal point of the patio with container garden landscaping, intimate lighting, tiki torches or candles. It's sure to be a feature you'll use year round.

4: Patio Heaters: There is a fairly extensive line of patio heaters available that allow you to enjoy your patio even on cold days. You might also consider an outdoor fireplace, or fire pit to heat your patio on the coldest of days.

5: Patio Misters are a wonderful addition if you live in a climate where summers can be unbearable. You'll keep your guests comfortable on even the hottest days.

6: Patios for children – If you have children you should think about a child friendly area. You can provide storage for outdoor games, pool and sprinkler fun, as well as keep towels and a change of clothes or shoes handy.

When planning your new patio addition consider your hobbies, family life style, and entertaining habits. Have fun with your patio design and make it your own!
