Ideas For Creating a Beautiful Summer Patio

Patios offer a great place to create a warm, welcoming area to invite friends and family. The materials most often used for patio foundations are stone, cement, brick and wood. A really great way to get an inexpensive look that appears to be stone but is created with cement is with a stamp. While the cement is wet a stamp that comes in various patterns is stamped on the cement. This can also be done on cement that is tinted so the final product looks like pink stone or grey marble. This can be done professionally or by the home owner with a stamp purchased at a supply store such as Home Depot.

Patios can be decorated with lots of greenery and plants. The first step to creating a great patio is adding lots of flowers and greenery. Set a budget for your patio greenery and head out to the local nursery. Choose a variety of annuals such Geraniums, Coleus, Zinnias, Petunias. Add a few patio trees as well for greenery and beauty. A budget is important also so that you do not use a huge chunk of your overall budget on flowers and greenery and not have the funds left that are needed for furniture etc.

Furniture should be comfortable and easy to care for. Consider high winds and rain and be prepared to store or purchase covers for the seats so that they can be kept dry in inclement weather. An ambiance can be created by using patio fire pits. These pits come in a variety of styles and shapes. They are a great center piece for patio furniture. They can create a style that blends or have a unique look that stands out. They even come as fire pit tables. Solar powered fountains and lighting are also great ideas for patios. Driving around various neighborhoods can give you great ideas for patios. Searching online as well as looking through magazines such as Better Homes and Gardens is a good resource of ideas for patios.

Another great idea for patios is insect repellant. There are a variety of machines that repel mosquitoes. They work through misting and also through other means. Machine works in various ranges so check to see if it is strong enough to work for your entire patio area. Here is an idea for getting rid of the little villains: place Listerine in a small spray bottle and spray around the furniture and the swing or any other garden furniture that you may have.

Patio Canopies: Protecting Your Patio From The Elements

Most working individuals with families target a home as their primary investment. Since the home is generally considered symbolic of one’s social status, many exert much effort to make their homes a beautiful and comfortable one without sacrificing functionality and the budget. This attitude also helps boost the property’s value and makes the dwelling a personal statement of the homeowner.

This motivation drives a multi-billion dollar market for home refurbishments, fixtures and related maintenance and services. One particular segment that thrives on home building and renovation is the market for patio canopies, covers and accessories.

The exposure that patios have to rain, snow, sun and the elements has made canopy manufacturers come up with varying models made of different materials to address this concern. For added comfort, canopy makers typically offer waterproof systems with roof tensioning and related support to prevent water accumulation. Made-to-order patio canopies can take 3-4 weeks before delivery.

One solution to protect patios from nature is the use of aluminum patio cover kits and retractable awnings. Such outdoor patio covers are generally for long-term use, maintenance-free and comply with standard municipal load ratings and provisions of the International Building Code. The retractable quality allows one to adjust awnings depending on the weather condition. Aluminum canopies also come in do-it-yourself models that can be used to augment a current deck, as carports or, for wealthier homeowners living near the water who have boats – protection for their vessels. Extended patio canopies allow homeowners practically continuous appreciation of the outdoors.

Patio canopies also have use for residences with a swimming pool, the backyard deck or other large and exposed areas. These flexible and pre-engineered structures can be attached to an existing home, over the target area to be covered or set up as a stand-alone unit. Canopies can also be made of steel while maintaining their retractability and flexibility. For added comfort, privacy or security, some manufacturers even offer screen attachments to close off a desired area. For wide-open patios, canopies effectively make them an extension of the house or a new room – giving the homeowner wider space and more comfort.

Homeowners have a wide range of options to better protect their patios and homes in general, ensuring also that visiting family and friends can be entertained outside regardless of weather conditions. Canopies also allow the owner to read a book, have tea or simply relax outside on the patio without any worry. Some canopy makers offers terms for individuals seeking a custom-made look with wind-release protection, awning flexibility and other desired features.

The US Census Bureau has noted that backyard patios have become an increasing fixture of new single-family homes: 45% of such dwellings have them, rising from 37% in 1992. This increase has fuelled a related jump in outdoor furniture sales: Figures from the American Home Furnishings Alliance reported a 129% increase in purchases of canopies, tables and other outdoor items from $1bn more than 10 years ago to $2.3bn in 2003.

That surge in demand has made retailers increase their focus on outdoor collections, with Hold Everything and West Elm launching their initial outdoor line in 2005. Separately, Restoration Hardware covered outdoor entertaining on 52 pages of its summer catalog, more than double the 25 pages it devoted to the category in 2004.

Some canopy covers are made from heavy-duty vinyl and are available in various sizes, allowing for easy maintenance and storage. Several makers offer vinyl patio units with limited 15-year warranties. As an alternative, companies also offer lattice patio cover kits created primarily for garden settings.

The market already offers patio canopies made from Alumawood, or aluminum material that feels and looks like wood. The product does not pose any of the problems identified with wood, including peeling, warping, repainting and termite attacks.

Patio canopies also extend beyond the residential market. Eide Industries, Inc. offers both permanent and temporary or portable models, with frames made from aluminum tubing or galvanized steel and fabric covers made from an extensive line of canvas products, for businesses and other non-residential users.

These exterior and interior products appeal to restaurants, resorts, hotels, retail shops, convention centers, theme parks, and exhibits and trade shows. For businesses fronted by a sidewalk, setting up a canopy along the path would help shade passers-by and also possibly draw potential customers to the shop. Combined with appropriate lighting at night, patio canopies add to the overall look of a business even during off-hours.

Patios: The New Trend in Home Remodels

In years past a patio was sort of a throw on to a home. It was typically a concrete slab to keep your feet clean on your way in or out. Then you'd plunk down a couple of chairs and a table and enjoy your patio when the sun went down. More recently, covered patios have become very popular. Adding a patio or "outdoor living area" to your home is both a great investment and a relaxing extension of your homes interior that you can enjoy all day and all yearlong. You might want to consider the following features.

1: Add an outdoor kitchen to your patio for easy entertaining. When planning your kitchen think about storage, clean up and prep areas. You can buy pre-made outdoor grills with these features or build your own custom kitchen.

2: Patio furnishings can be quite luxurious because they’re protected from the elements. Think outdoor living room with comfortable chairs, lounges, couches and plants all around.

3: If you have a spacious patio you might add a home spa. You can make this a focal point of the patio with container garden landscaping, intimate lighting, tiki torches or candles. It's sure to be a feature you'll use year round.

4: Patio Heaters: There is a fairly extensive line of patio heaters available that allow you to enjoy your patio even on cold days. You might also consider an outdoor fireplace, or fire pit to heat your patio on the coldest of days.

5: Patio Misters are a wonderful addition if you live in a climate where summers can be unbearable. You'll keep your guests comfortable on even the hottest days.

6: Patios for children – If you have children you should think about a child friendly area. You can provide storage for outdoor games, pool and sprinkler fun, as well as keep towels and a change of clothes or shoes handy.

When planning your new patio addition consider your hobbies, family life style, and entertaining habits. Have fun with your patio design and make it your own!

Building a Stone Patio - 3 Keys to a Quality Installation

Fundamentals

Are you planning to build a stone patio? Whether you hire a contractor or do it yourself, there are three keys to a quality stone patio installation. Proper site preparation is the foundation for success, and quality stonework is in the details. Good drainage can be the difference between an inviting outdoor living space and one that is potentially hazardous in colder climates.

Here's what to look for specifically in quality construction:

Site Preparation

  • the underlying soil compacted or undisturbed
  • 2" of gravel for good drainage
  • a concrete slab 3 1/2" to 4" thick with fiberglass additive for extra strength
  • 1/2" rebar tied in a 12" to 18" square grid with steel wire forming a cage

The cage is suspended within the concrete slab rather than sitting on the bottom. Compared to the cost of the entire project, this additional reinforcement is inexpensive insurance against a cracked slab and damaged stonework.

Stonework

  • elongated flagstones set perpendicular to the edge
  • mortar joints smooth, flat and consistent in size
  • flagstones evenly distributed in size and color
  • step risers between 7 1/2" to 8" in height
  • step edges built from thicker flagstones

Step edges that are thicker and heavier are less likely to come loose and will withstand foot traffic better. (Flagstone refers to any flat stone, generally 1" to 3" thick, used for patios and other flatwork.)

Drainage Requirements

Drainage requirements are site-specific and depend on the surrounding grade and existing structures. Some patios are a simple flat plane, sloping in one direction only. Most require more complicated slopes in several directions.

Take care to choose individual stones that contribute to good drainage by examining them for twists and curves. Drainage patterns may require setting stones that twist incrementally in the needed direction.

Proper slope can call for as much as 1/4" per foot but can sometimes be achieved with as little as 1/8" to 1/10" per foot. A flatter patio is better as long as it drains completely and away from structures.

Enjoyable Outdoor Living

Keep these fundamentals in mind when choosing a stone contractor or to avoid costly mistakes if you're doing it yourself. In the end, your stone patio should not only be beautiful but livable. It should be easy to move furniture around on, free from puddling and safety hazards and an investment that lasts a lifetime.

Of course, doing your "homework" always pays. Choose an experienced stonemason with good references, a solid reputation and one who offers a guarantee. Most important, be sure your contractor is willing to take the time to get the drainage right. It takes a little longer, but it's key to building a quality stone patio.

How to Care for a Flagstone Patio

Adding a flogstone patio to your home will provide your household with a whole new living area and come in very handy when you want to entertain your friends or family. This type of backyard accent will boost the value of your home and at the same time provide an area for you and your family to enjoy.

Patios are normally built with pavers, concrete, or flagstone. Patios constructed with flagstone offer up a product that will hold for decades as long as the stones are well taken care of. Because flagstone is porous, it's susceptible to staining and breakage. Fortunately, flagstone is very easy to care for and maintain.

If you are going to invest in a patio, then there are certain maintenance steps you should take to protect your investment and help your patio hold up as the years go on. Without any type of protection, flagstone can begin to shed and the surface can stain and discolor giving it a dull and dingy look.

Flagstone is usually made from layers of sandstone that have bonded together to form rock. Over time, a shedding process begins. Spalling is the name given to this shedding process. The higher quality flagstones shed slower because the stone is harder and denser. The shedding is worse when the stone changes levels. Water can then work its way below the top layer. Then in the colder months, the water freezes and can cause pieces of stone to fall off.

SEALING A Patio:

You can add a sealer that is specifically made for any natural stone to help prevent the water from getting under the stone surface. If your patio has already started to shed, you should remove any weak pieces that are already beginning to break off. Remove the damaged stone first. If you need to, replace broken stone before adding the sealant.

Be sure the surface is clean and free of loose debris. Similar to waxing a floor, you always want to add the protective sealant to a clean floor.

CLEANING A Flagstone Patio:

You'll need a flagstone cleaner, an outdoor broom made with synthetic bristles, a bucket and a pressure washer.

It is recommended that you clean your flagstone patio twice a year but most people just give their patio an annual spring cleaning. Your local hardware store will sell cleaners specifically made for cleaning flagstone. You'll use the bucket for mixing the solution.

Using the bristle push broom, apply the cleaning mixture making sure you cover and brush the solution onto every stone surface and all of the connecting mortar. You may need to apply an extra amount to any areas that are stained. Then let the solution soak in for 5-10 minutes. If there are still some stubborn stains remaining, give them a second application.

Finally, use your garden hose or pressure washer to rinse off the cleaner. Once the area is dry, you are ready to put your furniture back.

Once you've invested in a flagstone patio, it's a good idea to take these easy steps to keep it looking like new.

Patio Fireplaces

Patio fireplaces are free standing enclosed units that have chimneys to let the smoke vent from the fireplace just as the fireplace indoors has to have a chimney. Usually they burn wood or briquettes, but you can also get gas and propane fireplaces that provide the same heat but without the smoke and the trouble of trying to light the wood.

Using a fireplace on the patio is not a new idea. It lets you use the patio for longer periods of time in the spring and fall when the weather may be sunny, but the air is still cold. Some of the different types of outdoor fireplaces you can use for your patio include

  • The Chimenea fireplace. This is a Mexican outdoor fireplace with a chubby base where the fire burns and a tall narrow chimney through which the smoke vents. Usually these fireplaces are made from clay, but you can purchase cast iron models. If you have a clay chimenea, you want to make sure that you have it in the proper place. Moving it often can cause the clay to crack.
  • Fire rings. These are the cheapest type of fireplaces for patios. It consists of a cast iron ring without a bottom and the fire burns inside the ring. This would not be suitable to have directly on the patio and is best used off the patio.
  • Having a fireplace on the patio adds an ambiance to the patio in addition to providing warmth on a chilly evening. They usually have a hinged door in the front that gives you easy access for lighting a fire and adding wood or briquettes to keep it going. The screen assembly is easy to remove and you can also use them to cook food when you have a gathering of people on the patio. The fireplace you choose should be placed on concrete or brick. If you have a wooden floor on the patio, you should have anon-combustible pad under it to avoid catching the patio on fire.

    Patio Maintenance In Fall

Ahh fall! Crisp air, beautiful colors, and -- oh no! -- winter preparation! It's true that fall brings many household maintenance tasks, but the pleasant weather makes it enjoyable to be outside, and the time spent maintaining your patios and yards will add years to their life span.

Patio maintenance is particularly important in the fall. Patios which are made of wood should be treated with a waterproofing substance to protect them from the winter weather. This is not a big project -- it can be done in an hour or two for an average sized patio. The time spent doing this will protect the wood and prevent costly repair bills in the springtime.

Moisture is the big enemy of wood, so anything that can trap moisture should be removed. This means sweeping it from time to time to get rid of the falling leaves and to remove debris from between the floorboards of the patio. This can be done with a screwdriver or other small object. Debris which remains between the floorboards holds moisture and quickly rots the foundation frame underneath.

If your patio needs a coat of paint, the fall is a good time to do it. The paint will give the wood more protection during the wintertime. Just make sure not to leave the job too late in the season -- the weather should be clear and dry on the painting day for maximum effectiveness.

If you have plants on your patio they must be prepared for winter. Perennials can be protected with sackcloth and placed in an area where they are less exposed to the elements. Annuals should be removed from their beds and in the soil can be re-fertilized.

Patio furniture should be examined and repaired if necessary, and should be stored in a protected area. Leading patio furniture outside during the winter is bad for both furniture and patio -- moisture will accumulate under the legs and stain or rot the patio floor.

Doing all this work in the fall will extend the life of your patio. In addition, there will be fewer patio jobs to be done in the springtime. All you will need to do is bring out the furniture and replant your plants.

Patio Furniture: The Pros And Cons Of The Different Kinds Of Patio Furniture

For many people, relaxation in their homes involves lounging in their patio furniture and relishing the fresh air in their backyards. Parents usually spend weekends unwinding in their patio while the kids play their games in the backyard. Homeowners also invite friends and family over to an occasional barbecue, whose setting is, of course, the patio.

The patio is really the center of many different kinds of outdoor activities for the entire family. This is why it is important to select good quality patio furniture that is durable enough to withstand all this activity, as well as have a style that reflects the homeowner's personal taste in design.

There are actually several kinds of patio furniture to choose from. Among the most prevalent materials used these days are wood and wicker, which both look quite nice in an outdoor setting. Their natural color and material makes them blend well with the backdrop provided by your garden.

Many home owners also opt for wrought iron because they are more durable and require less maintenance, while also giving a look of opulence to their outdoor space. They actually have the romantic look that was very popular in the 18th century. Their weight will prevent them from toppling over in torrential winds, so you can leave them outside practically all year round.

Still there are others who choose to buy plastic patio furniture. This kind of patio furniture is easy to put away right after a gathering because they can stack. They are also easy to move around because of their light weight. However, for the more design-oriented homeowner, plastic patio furniture may not be the best choice as they do not offer much aesthetic value.

There are also less common types of patio furniture, such as glass or vinyl. For those homeowners who have covered patios, regular living room furniture may be brought out to the patio as well. In fact, many people treat patios as their outdoor living rooms, and their patio furniture are sofas and couches that you would normally find indoors. For more info see http://www.homepatiodeck.com/Articles/Patio_Design.php on Patio Design.

Choosing your patio furniture is really a personal decision. Some patio furniture might not work at all for certain individuals, but may be perfect for others. You just have to consider what you plan to be doing often in your patio, and of course, the patio furniture you decide on must reflect the style of your house, and your individual style as well.

    Creative Patio Landscaping Ideas

A patio in a garden can be categorized into two types. The first one is attached to the house building, preferable in the backyard. Such types of patio will be a semi-open space with seating arrangement like cane chairs and a small coffee table. Because of it's semi-open nature the residents can enjoy the view of the outside garden by seating inside the patio.

The second type of patio is detached from the house building into the garden itself. A small paved walk connects the patio and the house building. In this type also the design of patio is of semi-open type so that the residents can enjoy the view. Such type of patio can also contain a doghouse or any other arrangement for the safety of pets.

Patios can be designed with enough creativity. The second type of patio mentioned above can be treated as a separate building in itself and can have a very different theme that the rest of the house.

The construction of a patio in the garden is very simple. A brick wall with medium height and a sloping roof that is supported by vertical posts is an ideal patio design. Container gardening works best with such kind of patios. The main purse of a patio is to just create a small space to enjoy the surroundings and carry out certain human activities. A design that creates a habitable space is enough for a patio.

A little creativity can create wonders in patio landscaping. The surrounding landscaping can be merged into patio interiors for creating extra interest. For example a potion of the lawn or even fishpond can be taken into interior of the patio. As I said earlier the main purpose of a patio is to enjoy the garden fro m close. So such kind of ideas work really well in patio landscaping design.

Using Luxury Patio Furniture to Transform the Home Into a Tropical Paradise

Can't make it to the beach this year? Times are tight, but if your plans to economize mean cutting out the vacations, consider spending a little extra on beautifying your home. A few choice pieces of luxury patio furniture can turn a backyard in a Garden of Eden, so you'll never want to leave home again. Even in you don't want to invest in a full-scale patio set, or if you already have one, one or two indulgences is all you really need. Here, now are a few suggestions:

    Hammocks
In the old days, a hammock consisted of woven rope tied precariously in between two trees, and you were lucky to find two trees the right distance apart. Today, the classic white woven rope is still around, but now pretty much all hammocks are free-standing, so they can easily be moved and are steadier. As far as luxury patio furniture, having a hammock in itself can be considered a luxury, not because they're expensive, but because they afford their owner the most luxurious of relaxation. However, modern innovation has come up with some fancy and hip new designs, bestowing upon some hammocks the luxury moniker. Fancier models are made with nylon, chenille and more, and come in a myriad of colors and shapes. Some are big enough for two people, while the hammock chair is a popular and more compact option.

    Cabanas
Nothing says lounging by the pool in style like a cabana. Whether or not you actually own a pool is unimportant; adding a cabana to your luxury patio furniture is the apex of elegance. Most types resemble an oversized wooden, four-poster bed with a roof. Meant to comfortably seat anywhere from 2 or more people depending on the type, cabanas come with a weather-resistant mattress and pillows. Some also feature canvas siding, which can be unfurled for added privacy.

    Hot Tubs
A perfect fit for patios and decks are of course, hot tubs. When it comes to luxury patio furniture, hot tubs are incomparable and absolutely synonymous with relaxation. What most folks don't realize is that hot tubs are more affordable than people think. Sure, the fancier models will run upwards of $5,000 but there are pared down versions which are just as good for under $1,000. Perfect for relieving muscle pain and tension, hot tubs are enjoyable for all ages.

    Outdoor Saunas
Bring the spa home with your very own sauna. Passed down from Finnish tradition, these rooms utilize a dry or moist heat, often employing water poured over hot stones. The idea is that the heat cleanses and exfoliates the body from toxins. Added benefits included are that saunas tend to alleviate bronchitis, asthma and other respiratory disease. They are also proven to lessen rheumatoid arthritis. Saunas are usually made from wood, especially cedar and are traditionally rectangular or round-shaped. They do not take up too much room and make an attractive addition to luxury patio furniture, especially with matching woods.

    Fire Pit
Capture the ambiance of a beachside bonfire with a safe and beautiful fire pit. Though there are many affordable versions on the market, high end fire pits and outdoor fireplaces can be very ornate. While traditional fire pits and chimineas tend to be constructed from stone, brick and metal, but some newer versions feature a fireproof see-through glass frame. Some fire pits are so compact they fit on the table and can be brought (with caution, of course) inside to a sunroom.

You don't have to spend thousands of dollars in renovations to achieve an enviable luxury patio furniture setup. All it usually takes is just one well-thought accent, whether that's a sauna, a fire pit, etc. to reinvent your backyard and turn it into a home away from home.

Awnings Provide Much Needed Shade to Patio Areas

Summer time can be a great time to enjoy the outside spaces around your home, but the sun can be a brutal companion. In order to get some much needed respite from its powerful gaze you should consider going with a patio awning. These devices can provide some much needed protection from the sun. There are two main reasons that you might want to get protection from the sun, to protect yourself and your patio furniture from harmful UV rays and to provide a cooler environment in which to relax.

There is little doubt that UV rays have been linked to an increase in the occurrence of skin cancer. There is also lots of evidence that it increases the appearance of wrinkles in the skin as well. If you doubt it, just watch some TV and you will see tons of commercials talking about the latest cream to help protect your skin from these two ill effects of its life giving rays.

But you don't need a lotion to protect you from the sun, you need a patio awning. An awning will keep you safe from the sun while also protecting your furniture as well. Just like your skin, the fabric on your furniture doesn't like to be exposed to the sun either. The sun's rays do two things to most patio furniture: fades its color and breaks down its fabric, making it more prone to suffer from normal wear and tear.

Getting an awning to provide constant shade in the summer months will help keep your skin safe and your furniture looking as good as the day that you bought it.

The second thing that patio awnings can help do for your patio is to make the environment much, much cooler. You see, much of the heat generated on concrete patios is directly related to the direct sunlight shining down from above and then reflective off of the white concrete surface below. Not only can this be extremely hot, it can also be blinding to the eyes as well. By erecting a protective surface between you, your patio floor, and your patio furniture and the sun you will cut out the primary source of heat (direct sunlight) and a secondary source (the reflection off the white concrete) in one fell swoop.

The best thing about patio awnings is that you get all this rolled up in one affordable package. You also have a lot of choice as to how you want the awning to look. You have a choice of materials in wood, fabric, or aluminum. You even have a wide array of colors to choose from as well.

With a patio awning you get robust protection from the sun in one very cost effective package.

Joe writes for Patio Awnings Inc. There you can find information on all things patio awning - from different type of aluminum awnings, how to clean them, and what are some pros and cons with going with this type of option.
